Motorcycle Movies (That Don't Suck)!

I've been tasked with organising movie night for a bunch of buddies (all motorcyclists), and I'm wondering if anybody has some suggestions for a good motorcycle-oriented movie. Before you start listing names though, here are some that I've already crossed out:

  • Easy Rider: C'mon, it's just too kitsh. Besides, who hasn't seen it anyhow? Not to mention that it wouldn't be a very original choice...
  • Motorcycle Diaries: Although a very good movie, it doesn't so much evolve around the motorcycle.
  • Torque: Cheesy.
  • Biker Boyz: Über-cheesy.

Once movie I've been considering is The Fastest Indian starring Sir Anthony Hopkins. I've heard alot of good things about it, so maybe that'll be the ticket.

Suggestions are welcomed!

I have seen it, and if you had to pick just one, that would be a good choice. Another good one to consider is "Faster". "V-Four Victory" is a great one, if you can find it. Any Duke video of the Isle of Man will keep your audience interested as well.

Man, it's time to sort through my video collection again. I haven't watched them in ages...

Ride well,

I've seen the Fastest Indian and it is a great movie. My wife is not interested in motorcycles (or Vespa's--my ride) but was taken by the story---a man obsessed with doing something with a motorcycle.

The movie shows a lot of the stuff that makes riders special.

Dust to Glory, the documentary about the Baja 1000 is amazing. The motorcycle riding in it is frightening.

Now don't go dismissing Easy Rider so fast. Admit it or not it is the reason why there are so many male riders. Deep in our consciousness there is this idea (genetically imprinted now) of riding off with a buddy and ending up at a commune with chicks. It will never happen but it keeps a lot of guys rolling. *grin*

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'm going to rent The Fastest Indian because a) it sounds like a great flick, and b) it's available! So many other motorcycle movies sound so great, but you just can't find this stuff at the local Blockbuster...

Hi Luc - missing you on the VSRI forum. I watched "The Worlds Fastest Indian" three weeks ago and both my wife and I absolutely loved it. It is a real feel-good factor film and Hopkins portrays a wonderful character. It is well worth watching.

Enjoy and catch you online sometime.

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll be slowly moving on back to the VSRI forum after a summer's hiatus. Things just got busy for the past few months, coupled with the fact that my employer has added an IP filter on the network that blocks out many websites...

Cheers,
Lucky

World's Fastest Indian would be well worthwhile. Dust to Glory, Dana Brown's doc about the Baja 1000 is better. How about On Any Sunday, Bruce Brown's (Dana's father) classic tribute to Steve McQueen and Malcolm Smith. The Leather Boys, another classic, about the Brit rocker scene ofhte early '60s, but only if your buds are comfortable in their masculinity. The a personal favorite of mine, Cycles South, by Don Marshall, kind of Easy Riders meets On Any Sunday, about three guys who set out cross country from Denver on BSA singles, headed for Mexico. Mexican hoers, pot-smoking hippie communards, spear fishing, scrambles and more.

The DVD of Ewan Mcgregor and Charlie Boorman's around the world trip is excellent, but I guess its more documentary than movie. Its called Long Way round.

On any sunday is also an excellent motorcycle movie.

Vinod - Thanks for the suggestion, although I read the book (a really good read, by the way), I haven't seen the documentary. I'll keep an eye out for it at the video store.

Cheers,
Lucky

What the? No one even MENTIONED Werewolves on Wheels!!

If you're going to watch "biker movies," you have to go for the BOTTOM of the bucket.

Wherewolves on Wheels, eh? Sounds, uhm, interesting! ;-)

Actually, the Drive-In Classics Channel on satellite TV has had "Biker Movie" marathons in the past; showing classics like Girls from Thunder Strip, The Mini-Skirt Mob, etc... Didn't notice if "Wherewolves on Wheels" was in the listings!
